Liverpool: Jeff Bezos reportedly approached to join investment consortium

The possibility of new investment in Liverpool Football Club has recently gained attention, with reports suggesting that Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, has been approached to join a consortium. This development follows earlier news that a group led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia expressed interest in acquiring a stake in the Premier League club.

Bhatia, who was a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for a period, transferred his shares in the west London club recently. This move appeared to clear the way for him to lead a consortium aiming to purchase a reported 30% stake in the Anfield club. Sources close to Bhatia did not comment on whether Bezos had been approached, stating only that discussions were held with various potential investors.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owners, also declined to comment on the matter. An FSG spokesperson has confirmed that an investment consortium led by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club. Bhatia’s consortium is understood to be seeking funding from other potential investors.

Bezos’s prior interest in sports

Jeff Bezos, a prominent American businessman, is known as the founder of Amazon and is among the wealthiest individuals globally. He stepped down as Amazon’s chief executive in 2021 to become executive chairman and retains an ownership stake in the company. Bezos also owns The Washington Post and aerospace company Blue Origin.

While Bezos has not yet invested in sports, he has explored such opportunities in the past. In 2023, he was linked with a potential takeover of the NFL franchise Washington Commanders when the team was put up for sale. He also previously considered acquiring the Seattle Seahawks, another NFL team. However, Bezos ultimately decided against submitting offers for either franchise.

Amazon, under Bezos’s leadership, has diversified into entertainment and has acquired various sports rights for its streaming service. This includes live UK rights for Premier League games for several seasons and broadcasts of the Champions League in some European countries, as well as NFL in the US.

FSG’s financial position and fan perspective

The current financial situation of Liverpool is considered strong. The club achieved record revenues and was the highest-placed Premier League club in the Deloitte Football Money League. This financial stability suggests that the new investment is not primarily driven by a need to cover lost revenue or pay down debt, as was the case when FSG sold a minority stake to Dynasty Equity in 2023.

This development raises questions about FSG’s long-term strategy for Liverpool. Since acquiring the club, FSG has overseen significant success, with the team winning multiple titles including the Premier League and Champions League. The club has also seen upgrades to its training ground and stadium.

For Liverpool supporters, the prospect of new investors brings both interest and questions. Neil Atkinson, CEO of The Anfield Wrap, noted that questions should be asked whenever individuals express interest in investing in a Premier League club. He highlighted the importance of understanding the motives of such wealthy individuals.

The club is currently experiencing a period of change, with a new head coach, Andoni Iraola, and significant changes at a senior level, including Michael Edwards stepping down as FSG’s CEO of football. These changes, coupled with the search for new investment, contribute to an uncertain time for the club.

Almost four years after FSG explored the possibility of selling the club, the current interest from investors raises the question of whether this could be part of a broader strategy towards an eventual exit from Anfield.
