Chelsea secures Morgan Rogers
Chelsea has officially announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033. He is set to join Xabi Alonso’s squad in preparation for the upcoming 2026/27 season.
Rogers expressed his excitement about the move, stating his long-standing admiration for Chelsea, which he considers the largest club in London. He also highlighted his enthusiasm for the club’s project under the new manager and the direction the team is heading.
The transfer, reportedly valued at a record fee for a British player, is said to be £117 million. This club-record deal generated considerable discussion when the news first emerged on Saturday, just hours before Rogers participated in England’s 6-4 victory over France in the World Cup third-place play-off match.
The process to secure Rogers’ transfer reportedly concluded within 48 hours. Formal negotiations between Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Rogers’ representatives began on Thursday, following England’s semi-final defeat against Argentina. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly contacted Rogers on Friday to discuss his plans, with personal terms agreed upon the same day. The final stages of the negotiations were completed on Saturday.
Rogers’ impact and Villa’s considerations
Rogers arrives at Chelsea having established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions included 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He played a role in guiding the Midlands club to a top-four finish and subsequently lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.
Since his senior debut for England in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular for the Three Lions, earning 22 caps and representing his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. His return of 14 goals and 11 assists for Aston Villa last season made him a primary target for several clubs.
Despite having five years remaining on his contract, Aston Villa ultimately agreed to the transfer. Sources close to the deal indicated that the sale of Rogers was considered a straightforward solution for Aston Villa to reshape their squad and comply with financial regulations. The club had reportedly anticipated Rogers’ departure once England exited the World Cup, and had already secured his direct replacement, Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, for a club-record fee.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery reportedly considered Rogers to be the club’s best player and among the top five in the Premier League. In November, the England international received a third new contract within a two-year period. Last summer, Emery had reportedly asked Rogers to stay for an additional season, recognising his importance, particularly due to his versatility in attacking positions.
The pursuit and future role
Chelsea’s interest in Rogers dates back to before he joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024. This interest resurfaced in January 2025 and intensified last summer, though Aston Villa initially resisted selling him.
Rogers was a priority for Chelsea this summer, with the club seeking a versatile attacker capable of immediately starting for the team. Xabi Alonso and Chelsea reportedly value Rogers’ ability to play across various positions, including on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield. His physical attributes, size, and attitude are also appreciated, with Rogers seen as a humble individual without ego who can integrate well into the dressing room.
During their conversation, Xabi Alonso reportedly conveyed his strong desire to bring Rogers to the club since his appointment in May, outlining how he envisioned Rogers being utilised. Rogers was reportedly impressed by the manager’s passion and reputation. It is hoped that Rogers can contribute to forming a dynamic attacking lineup at Chelsea, alongside players such as Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Estevao.
Arsenal had also shown significant interest in Rogers, with some reports suggesting they were in a strong position to sign him. England teammates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, along with Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, reportedly spoke with Rogers to persuade him to join. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also reportedly had direct conversations with the player. However, Chelsea ultimately secured his signature.
Aston Villa co-owner and chairman Nassef Sawiris reportedly had the final say on Rogers’ departure. The club will reportedly use the funds from Rogers’ transfer to sign a fast winger, with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville and Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye among the leading targets.
