Aston Villa agrees deal for Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho

Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of winger Alejandro Garnacho. The deal is structured as a loan with a conditional obligation to buy, which is considered easily achievable. This arrangement follows a separate transaction where Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea for a significant fee.

Garnacho, an Argentina international, joined Chelsea from Manchester United last summer. Reports indicate that the total package for Garnacho, including the loan fee, aligns with Chelsea‘s valuation.

Financial Considerations for Both Clubs

Both Chelsea and Aston Villa have faced scrutiny regarding financial regulations. Both clubs were recently fined by UEFA for breaches of financial sustainability rules. Chelsea, in particular, entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA last year, subjecting them to stricter financial guidelines, even without European competition this season.

The sale of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea provided Aston Villa with a substantial profit, which is expected to help them comply with financial regulations from both UEFA and the Premier League. However, the structure of the Garnacho deal is crucial due to UEFA‘s rules on player exchange transactions.

UEFA regulations state that multiple deals between two clubs within a 45-day period, involving players moving in both directions, can be considered a swap. If the Garnacho and Rogers deals were classified as a single player exchange, Aston Villa‘s accounting profit from the Rogers sale would be reduced by UEFA calculations to the net difference in fees.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire noted that UEFA is proactive in preventing convenient player swaps where clubs might book profits to comply with rules. He also highlighted that Premier League rules are less stringent in this area.

A loan with a conditional obligation to buy, where the condition is deemed virtually certain, could still be interpreted by UEFA as a permanent transfer from the start of the loan agreement, thus potentially falling under player exchange transaction rules. This means there needs to be sufficient risk in the deal for UEFA to be satisfied that a permanent move is not a foregone conclusion.

Garnacho’s Role at Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery reportedly admired Garnacho, who was made available for transfer by Chelsea this summer. The loan structure allows Aston Villa control and could reduce their immediate costs. The club has previously used similar loan deals, including for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.

Garnacho’s first season at Chelsea saw him make 25 appearances in the Premier League, averaging less than 49 minutes per game. His five goal involvements meant an average of one every 243 minutes. In comparison, Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia, who also played on the left flank for Aston Villa last season, had higher average returns.

Garnacho typically operates by staying wide on the touchline. This style of play might require Unai Emery to adapt his attacking patterns or for Garnacho to show versatility. He has previously played on the right-hand side, scoring a goal in an FA Cup final win for Manchester United.

Aston Villa‘s squad needs rebuilding after several departures, and the club aims to be competitive on multiple fronts this season. The loan deal for Garnacho is intended to work for both clubs, with Chelsea believing the conditions for a permanent move are easily achievable.

Chelsea has also been active in the transfer market, exploring defensive options and having agreed to deals for Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers. They have also reportedly shown interest in John Stones and Jacobo Ramon, and are in talks for full-back Pep Chavarria, who is expected to cost between £25m and £40m. Before further arrivals, Chelsea has 38 senior players on their books, indicating further sales are likely.

Players like Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah, and Marc Guiu are among those available for transfer, while Mamadou Sarr is expected to go on loan. A small group of players, including Moises Caicedo, Estevao Willian, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Levi Colwill, are considered untouchable.

The Morgan Rogers deal, valued at £117m, makes him the most expensive British footballer in history.
