Afghanistan’s Qualification Journey
Afghanistan has secured direct qualification for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027. This achievement follows their victory over Ireland in the third One-Day International in Belfast. The win ensures Afghanistan will finish among the top teams in the one-day rankings by the September 30 cut-off date, joining nations such as Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh.
The qualification was confirmed after Afghanistan defeated Ireland by three wickets. In the match, Afghanistan bowled Ireland out for 206 runs in 46.3 overs. Despite a batting collapse where they slipped from 97 for two to 176 for seven, captain Rashid Khan played a crucial unbeaten innings of 37 runs from 43 balls. He was supported by Yamin Ahmadzai, who remained 4 not out from 26 balls, guiding Afghanistan to victory in 44.5 overs.
This marks Afghanistan’s fourth appearance in the ODI World Cup. Their path to direct qualification was also aided by a 92-run victory over Ireland in the second ODI of the series. The first ODI of the five-match series was washed out.
West Indies to Navigate Qualifiers Again
Meanwhile, West Indies, two-time champions, have missed out on direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup. This means the team will need to go through the qualification rounds to secure a spot in the 50-over tournament. The West Indies’ fate was sealed following Afghanistan’s victory over Ireland, which made it impossible for them to reach the required direct qualification spots before the September 30, 2026 deadline.
The West Indies are currently ranked 10th in the ODI rankings. They are behind Afghanistan, who are ranked eighth, and Bangladesh, who are ranked ninth. The qualification system grants automatic places to co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. The remaining seven direct spots are determined by the ICC ODI rankings, with the cut-off date for these rankings being September 30, 2026.
This is not the first time the West Indies have faced this challenge. They also failed to secure direct qualification for the 2019 and 2023 editions of the tournament. While they successfully navigated the qualifiers in 2019, they were eliminated in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers, leading to their absence from the main tournament in India. This marked the first time they missed a men’s 50-overs World Cup.
The team has two ODIs against India remaining before the cut-off date, with the first two games scheduled for Thiruvananthapuram on September 27 and Guwahati on September 30. However, even winning both of these matches will not be enough for the West Indies to secure a direct qualification spot. This means their participation in the 2027 World Cup will depend on their performance in the upcoming qualifiers.
Tournament Details and Other Teams
The 2027 World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The tournament is scheduled to take place in October-November, with matches spread across 12 venues. Zimbabwe, ranked 11th, already has an automatic place as a co-host. The full tournament schedule has not yet been released.
Ireland has also lost its opportunity for direct qualification. The Irish side needed to win all five matches in their series against Afghanistan to remain in contention. Their hopes were impacted when the opening ODI in Bready was washed out on August 5, and then further diminished by Afghanistan’s 92-run victory in the second game. Both West Indies and Ireland will now need to go through the qualification route to reach the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
The top eight teams in the one-day rankings on September 30, excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, qualify directly for the event.
