Coimbatore Weather: Unexpected Heavy Rain Forecast

Coimbatore is set to experience heavy rain over the next week, a surprising turn for Tamil Nadu’s typically scorching summer. The Chennai Meteorological Centre has issued warnings across eight districts, including Madurai and Coimbatore.

The forecast predicts thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h. This unusual weather pattern stems from a trough extending from western Rajasthan to the Kumari Sea, creating conditions ripe for rainfall.

Starting May 2, 2026, light to moderate rain will begin in several parts of Tamil Nadu. However, by May 3, heavy rain is expected specifically in the hill areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts.

Forecast details:

  • May 2: Light to moderate rain across various areas
  • May 3: Heavy rain anticipated in hill regions
  • May 4: Continued light to moderate rainfall expected
  • May 5: Heavy rainfall forecasted in Coimbatore and surrounding areas
  • May 6: Heavy rain expected again in hill areas
  • May 7: Light to moderate rain will persist
  • May 8: Heavy rain forecasted across several districts

This unexpected rainfall brings a welcome respite from the sweltering heat that usually grips Tamil Nadu at this time of year. During this period, temperatures are projected to hover around a maximum of 39-40°C, with minimums around 29-30°C.

The meteorological department emphasizes that such heavy rainfall during the summer months is quite rare in Tamil Nadu. Residents are advised to stay alert and prepared for sudden weather changes as the week unfolds.
