Suthar’s Unique Bowling Style
Manav Suthar is noted for his classical left-arm spin, a style that stands out in contemporary cricket, where variations and mystery often dominate. Suthar’s talent has also been recognised internationally. He joined Warwickshire for a stint in County cricket in England, where he bowled with a different cricket ball and experienced varied conditions. Head coach Ian Westwood expressed satisfaction with Suthar’s signing, noting his ability to make an impact despite playing only two games. Westwood also praised Suthar’s contributions with the bat lower down the order, considering him an asset to any team.
His move to England came shortly after his Test debut against Afghanistan. The quick turnaround between his international assignment and the County game, with just three days separating the matches, did not hinder his performance. Coaches at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) have commended Suthar’s work ethic. After receiving guidance from a former cricketer, as requested by VVS Laxman, Suthar made technical adjustments, such as shortening his delivery stride, which prepared him for higher-level challenges. His consistent preparation and dedication enable him to adapt and be ready for opportunities.
India’s Spin Strategy in Sri Lanka
Ahead of the series in Sri Lanka, Suthar visited the CoE to refine his spin bowling techniques. He received advice on how to use the wind in Galle to his advantage, ensuring the ball finishes on the stumps and utilising drift according to the conditions. This strategic approach is expected to help him overcome pitch conditions and become a reliable bowler for the team.
India is considering fielding three specialist spinners in the upcoming Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, a rare occurrence for an away match. Bowling Coach Morne Morkel indicated that the team might include Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, and Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI. This would mark the first time in nearly four years that India has played three specialist spinners away from home.
The last instance of India playing three spinners in an away Test was in December 2022 against Bangladesh in Chittagong, featuring Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav. In that match, Kuldeep Yadav achieved a career-best figure of 5/40 in the first innings and took 3/73 in the second. However, he was subsequently dropped for the next game. The decision to potentially field three spinners in Galle suggests a strategic move to leverage spin-friendly pitches in Sri Lanka, with the first Test scheduled to begin on Saturday.
