Chelsea are currently managing a substantial squad of 41 senior players, with just 25 days remaining in the transfer window to address the situation. New manager Xabi Alonso aims to significantly reduce the squad size, as the club will not be participating in European football this season.
Despite the Premier League’s 25-man squad rule, which allows for numerous under-21 and homegrown players, the large number of un-involved players could impact squad harmony. To reach a more manageable 25 senior players, Chelsea would need to offload 16 players by the beginning of September.
Squad Restructuring Efforts
The club has a history of players being sidelined, a practice that Fifa has since outlawed, making squad reduction even more critical. Had Chelsea qualified for European competitions, they might have faced registration issues, as seen during their 2024-25 Conference League-winning campaign. The club is also subject to a Uefa settlement agreement for three more seasons, though efforts to improve finances have been acknowledged.
Recent acquisitions, including Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, and Maxence Lacroix, have bolstered Alonso’s squad. Additionally, full-back Pep Chavarria is reportedly close to joining from Rayo Vallecano. The sheer size of the squad was evident during a recent match in Hong Kong, where Chelsea had 21 substitutes, with only five being academy players.
Several players are either not training with the first team or are available for moves. Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana, and Caleb Wiley are all available for permanent or loan transfers. Furthermore, seven players, including Enzo Fernandez, Reece James, and Henderson, are still on holiday after participating in the latter stages of the World Cup.
Defensive and Midfield Changes
In defence, Trevoh Chalobah is nearing a move to Como for a reported £31m, including add-ons. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen is set to join sister club Strasbourg on loan. Alonso’s goalkeeping options appear stable with Robert Sanchez, Mike Penders, and Teddy Sharman-Lowe. Club captain Reece James is joined by Malo Gusto and Palestra at right-back, with Chelsea reportedly placing a £75m price tag on Gusto amid interest from Manchester City.
On the left, Jorrel Hato is present, and the club is close to finalising the £16.3m signing of Chavarria. The central defence currently has nine players, a number Alonso aims to reduce to between four and five. Disasi and Badiashile are available for sale, while Mamadou Sarr is expected to go out on loan. This would leave Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo as the primary centre-back options.
The future of Argentina Under-20 international Aaron Anselmino remains unclear, though another loan spell is anticipated. In midfield, Chelsea have reportedly valued Enzo Fernandez at £120m, with the player exploring his options, though the club is also open to retaining him. He is joined by Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, new signing Valentin Barco, Henderson, and Dario Essugo. Essugo, who was previously told he would stay, is now open to a loan move for more regular playing time.
Attacking Options and Financial Strategy
The return of Mykhailo Mudryk after a 20-month suspension due to a positive test for meldonium presents another situation for Chelsea to manage, with the club assessing his fitness. Other attacking options include Jamie Gittens on the left wing, while Pedro Neto and new arrival Geovany Quenda are primarily right-sided players. Cole Palmer and Rogers are the two number 10s.
Chelsea aims to have three strikers for the upcoming season, with Joao Pedro and summer signing Danny Welbeck likely to be joined by one more forward, possibly Emmanuel Emegha. However, uncertainty remains given the presence of Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap. The club’s strategy of stockpiling talent dates back over a decade, with Fifa having introduced limits on loans to curb the practice.
Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over in 2022, Chelsea acquired Strasbourg, aligning with the multi-club ownership trend. They have also focused on signing younger players on lower wages, allowing for flexible player movement. Chelsea has spent £1.8bn on talent acquisition in the past four years, the highest in Europe, but has also generated nearly £1bn from player sales, including a Premier League record £300m.
The club anticipates a similar level of sales this summer, with Chalobah’s move to Como pushing their total beyond £150m. Alejandro Garnacho’s loan to Aston Villa includes an obligation to buy, valued at approximately £40m next summer.
Chelsea’s revenues are among the lowest of the traditional ‘big six’ clubs, largely due to factors such as the size of Stamford Bridge, commercial underperformance, and missing out on Champions League football in three of the past four seasons. Player trading remains crucial in addressing this financial shortfall.
The club’s hierarchy is now open to offers for Tosin Adarabioyo, who joined on a Bosman from Fulham in 2024, as they seek to reduce squad numbers and comply with financial regulations. A loan move to Strasbourg is still a possibility for Adarabioyo if other interest does not materialise. Meanwhile, Axel Disasi’s situation could see him move to Crystal Palace, who have made a loan offer with a buying obligation, or potentially to a Serie A club.
Benoit Badiashile is also reportedly close to a loan deal with an option to buy with Napoli, although Juventus are also said to be interested. Alonso has publicly stated his preference for having four or five recognised centre-backs, but the acquisition of Lacroix has increased Chelsea’s central defensive options to ten. The club is reportedly aiming for a combined £90m from the sales of Chalobah, Disasi, and Badiashile.
The club’s approach to player recruitment has been characterised by signing a large number of players, with many having limited appearances. Between the 2022 summer window and last January, Chelsea permanently signed 46 senior players, of whom 17 have already departed and 17 have started fewer than four Premier League games. This suggests that some of the current summer signings might also have short tenures.
The club’s focus on experience has also been noted, with players like Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck joining. Chelsea did not qualify for Europe next season after finishing 10th in a campaign that saw Enzo Maresca leave the club and Liam Rosenior dismissed. The team is set to face AC Milan in Indonesia on Saturday before playing Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta’zim on Sunday.
