Community Shield and Premier League Success
The Community Shield, contested by English champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City at Cardiff‘s Principality Stadium, often prompts questions about its correlation with future Premier League success. Historically, winning the Community Shield has not consistently led to a league title. Since the Premier League began in 1992-93, only eight of 34 Community Shield winners have gone on to win the league in the same season. Five of these instances occurred between 2005 and 2010. Manchester City in 2019 was the most recent team to achieve this, preceded by Alex Ferguson‘s Manchester United in 2011.
In fact, only one of the last 15 Community Shield winners has become league champions that season. Interestingly, teams that lost the Community Shield have secured more league titles since 1992, with 10 such occurrences. This includes Manchester City, who won the league for three consecutive years between 2021 and 2023 after losing the Shield. Approximately 47% of the time, the eventual Premier League winners did not participate in the Community Shield, as was the case for Arsenal in the 2025-26 season. In 53% of cases, the Shield winners finished higher in the league than the losers. On 10 occasions, the two teams competing in the Shield also finished as the top two in the Premier League, with the Shield winners topping the league four times.
Regarding previous Premier League winners, they have won the Community Shield 18 out of 34 times, or 53%. However, this has become less frequent recently. FA Cup winners, including Crystal Palace, have claimed eight of the last 12 Shields, a contrast to the previous 22 seasons where this happened only five times. On three occasions in the Premier League era, neither the league nor cup winners secured the Shield. Arsenal (1999 and 2023) and Manchester United (2010) qualified as league runners-up and defeated the Double winners in the match.
Impact of Goalscorers and Squad Changes
The performance of goalscorers in the Community Shield has shown varied outcomes for their subsequent seasons. For example, Crystal Palace’s 2025 scorers, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr, collectively scored 37 goals the following season. Hugo Ekitike scored his first of 17 goals for Liverpool in his debut season after netting in the Shield, while Jeremie Frimpong did not have a strong first campaign after scoring. In 2023, Cole Palmer scored for Manchester City against Arsenal in a match they eventually lost on penalties. Palmer went on to score 22 Premier League goals and was named young player of the season for Chelsea, after a transfer. Conversely, Darwin Nunez scored on his Liverpool debut in the Shield, while Erling Haaland did not score on his City debut. Haaland, however, went on to score 52 goals that season, significantly more than Nunez’s 15. Kelechi Iheanacho scored only four Premier League goals after his 2021 Community Shield winner. In 2019, Raheem Sterling‘s Shield goal for City against his former club Liverpool marked the beginning of his most productive season, with 31 goals.
This year’s Community Shield offers an early look at both Arsenal’s drive after winning their 14th league title and how Manchester City’s squad is adapting under new manager Enzo Maresca. Arsenal’s previous season involved significant physical and emotional demands, as evidenced by Declan Rice‘s exhaustion and Bukayo Saka‘s intermittent contributions at the World Cup, where William Saliba sustained a back injury. The start of a new season following a major tournament like the World Cup can often be unpredictable. Nine of the 20 Premier League clubs have new managers this summer, and for the first time in 40 years, none of the five prominent managerial figures of the Premier League era will be in charge of a club. While Mikel Arteta is the longest-serving manager in the league, there are questions about Arsenal’s potential start to the season.

New Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has provided an update on his squad’s fitness ahead of the Community Shield. He noted that many players have only recently returned after participating in the World Cup, which could influence team selection for the match against Arsenal. Among those who travelled to Hong Kong and South Korea, winger Ryan McAidoo is the only player to have experienced a minor setback, picking up a slight shoulder issue during the first game against Inter.
