Arrest and Allegations
Abishek Porel, a wicketkeeper-batter who plays for Bengal in domestic cricket and the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, has been arrested in Hooghly. The arrest follows allegations made by a medical student, who filed a complaint at Mogra Police Station. The case involves claims of a physical relationship established on the promise of marriage, subsequent intimidation, and the recording of private moments.
Police took Porel into custody on Tuesday. He was formally arrested after questioning and subsequently underwent a medical examination. Following these procedures, Porel was produced before the Chinsurah Court as the legal process began.
The complaint, lodged by the woman and her mother, alleges that Porel had sexual relations with the woman after promising to marry her. She further accused him of recording intimate moments and later using these recordings to intimidate her. The allegations also detail an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, where the woman was allegedly confined, denied food, and left physically weak, requiring medical attention. These specific claims are part of the complaint and have not yet been established in court.
Details of the Complaint and Legal Proceedings
According to the complaint, the woman and Porel were in a relationship, and their families had reportedly discussed marriage. The situation reportedly changed after the complainant learned about Porel’s alleged relationships with other women, which led to the breakdown of their relationship. The complaint includes allegations of sexual assault, criminal intimidation, and the recording of private moments, with further claims that private material was later used for threats or intimidation.
The matter escalated to the Calcutta High Court after the complainant approached the court. The court subsequently directed the police to take steps for Porel’s arrest as part of the ongoing investigation. Furthermore, the court ordered Mogra Police to seize Porel’s electronic devices. This directive was issued with the aim of preventing the circulation of photographs or any other private material linked to the complainant. As part of their investigation, police had already seized a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination.
A case has been registered against Porel under multiple sections of the BNS and IT Act, including Sections 69, 311, 318, 66, and 72. Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that there was a court order for it. He also mentioned that Porel was expected to be produced before the Chinsurah court on Tuesday.
Porel’s Response and Ongoing Investigation
The complaint was lodged on June 23 by a medical student from Karnataka at the Mogra Police Station. Police sources indicated that Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh visited the Mogra police station to discuss the course of action with the officer-in-charge, Soumen Biswas, and DSP (Crime) Abhijit Singh Mahapatra, issuing necessary instructions for the case. Police subsequently began their investigation, visiting Porel’s house in Chandannagar multiple times but initially unable to locate him.
The woman alleged that her relationship with Porel had lasted for three years, during which they had also traveled abroad together. However, differences reportedly emerged approximately one-and-a-half years ago, after which she claims Porel began to distance himself from her. She further alleged that Porel had promised marriage but later became unwilling to fulfill that promise.
Porel, who was in Bengaluru when the complaint was lodged, denied all the allegations. He reportedly stated that such claims were emerging because he was “playing well now” and that he was busy with his family after the IPL had just ended. He also mentioned that the police had not contacted him about the matter at that point, adding that he would speak about it when the police investigated. Reactions from Porel and his family are currently awaited. The allegations against him have not been established in court, and the facts of the case will be determined through the ongoing investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
