This potential transfer could see Fernandez reunite with his former Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca, who is now the new boss at Manchester City.
However, Enzo Maresca indicated that Manchester City is unlikely to meet this deadline. When questioned on Friday, Maresca stated, “I don’t think we’re going to do something today.” The actual transfer deadline is on Tuesday, 1 September at 23:00 BST.
Potential Rodri Exit and Transfer Valuations
A potential deal for Fernandez appears to be contingent on Manchester City selling Spain midfielder Rodri to Barcelona. Rodri has been a key figure in City’s recent successes, including their 2022-23 Treble win. He scored the winning goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan.
Rodri reportedly wishes to return to Spain and join Barcelona, with Real Madrid no longer pursuing him. Manchester City is asking for 80m euros (£68.4m) for the player. Barcelona’s initial bid for Rodri, who has a year remaining on his contract, was £38.5m. City maintains its valuation must be met and is prepared to keep Rodri, risking his departure for free in 2027 if the right fee is not offered.
The transfer valuations of Fernandez and Rodri differ significantly. Chelsea values Fernandez at £120m, while Barcelona is attempting to acquire Rodri for approximately half that amount. Factors contributing to these valuations include age and contract length. Rodri, who turned earlier this summer, is in the final year of his contract, whereas Fernandez has six years remaining on his deal with Chelsea.

However, age and contract runway are considered major factors in determining player value. Fernandez’s current Transfermarkt value is at its highest, having risen to £85.5m, while Rodri’s has dropped to £47m.

If Fernandez were to join Manchester City for £120m, it would mark the fourth largest transfer in football history.
