Gas cylinder: Rising Prices Prompt Shift to Piped Natural Gas in India

In the bustling streets of India, families gather around their kitchens, the aroma of spices filling the air. But lately, that comforting scene has been overshadowed by rising costs. The price of a 14.2Kg domestic LPG cylinder has surged by Rs 60, driven by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This isn’t just a number; it’s a stark reminder of how global events ripple through local lives.

As if that weren’t enough, commercial cylinder prices have seen three hikes within April alone—totaling Rs 196. Households are feeling the pinch. To manage this crisis, the government is tightening LPG booking rules. Now, urban residents must wait 25 days between bookings, while rural households face an even longer gap of 45 days.

This shift comes as part of a broader push towards piped natural gas (PNG). Households already connected to PNG can no longer surrender their LPG connections. If they don’t transition despite availability, their LPG supply will cease after three months—a hard deadline that’s causing anxiety among many.

The Indian government is implementing these measures to ease the burden on families while adapting to fluctuating energy markets. They’re also introducing an OTP-based delivery authentication system for LPG deliveries—a move expected to become permanent.

For those enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Aadhaar-based biometric authentication is now mandatory if they haven’t completed it yet—adding another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation.

But there’s a silver lining—approximately 5.45 lakh PNG connections have been established since March 2026. This shift could signal a new era for energy consumption in India, one where reliance on traditional gas cylinders diminishes.

Yet, with rising costs and stricter regulations, many are left wondering how they’ll adapt to these changes. As observers look ahead, further revisions in LPG prices are anticipated from May 1, 2026. Families brace themselves for what’s next—hoping for relief amid the uncertainty.
