On March 23, Jaipur welcomed a refreshing change in weather as several areas experienced rainfall, shifting the climate from warm to pleasantly cool. This sudden change, however, comes with significant concerns for local farmers as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide alert for thunderstorms, rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds.
Rajasthan’s Chief Minister, Bhajanlal Sharma, has taken immediate action by instructing district collectors to conduct surveys assessing the potential crop damage caused by the recent heavy rainfall. “The prosperity of Rajasthan rests on the foundation of our farmer brothers and sisters. The state government stands firmly with you with complete sensitivity and responsibility,” Sharma stated, emphasizing the importance of supporting the agricultural community during this challenging time.
As thunderstorms sweep across the region, an ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and parts of West Bengal, warning residents of wind speeds that may reach 60 to 70 kmph. Akhil Shrivastava from the IMD noted, “A large-scale thunderstorm activity is currently being witnessed across India,” indicating that the weather patterns are affecting a broader area.
In Jaipur, the rainfall has brought a significant drop in temperatures, providing a brief respite from the heat. On March 22, Barmer recorded the highest maximum temperature in Rajasthan at 35.2 degrees Celsius, but the rain has since altered the forecast. Light rain and thunderstorms were also observed in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Barmer, and Shekhawati, contributing to a more temperate atmosphere.
Looking ahead, rainfall activity in the Shekhawati region is anticipated on March 25, which could further impact local agriculture. While the immediate weather changes are welcomed by many, the potential for crop damage looms large, and farmers are left anxious about the effects of the storms.
As the situation develops, the government is prioritizing assessments to ensure that farmers receive the necessary support. “Instructions have been issued to all District Collectors to immediately conduct surveys and submit reports at the earliest for the proper assessment of the damage caused to our farmer brethren due to heavy rainfall in various regions of the state,” Sharma added.
