A major fire broke out in a cluster of jhuggis at Mansa Ram Park near the fish market in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, gutting around 80 shanties. This incident occurred late Wednesday night, with the fire reported at approximately 11:57 PM. In response to the fire, more than 20 fire tenders were initially deployed, a number that later increased to around 28 as firefighters battled the flames for several hours. The situation was brought under control around 3 AM on Thursday, with cooling operations continuing for several hours afterward to prevent any fresh flare-ups.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and hundreds of residents managed to escape in time due to the swift evacuation carried out by police and firefighters. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh stated, “All inhabitants of the shanties were safely evacuated, and the fire brigade was called to the spot.” This quick action was crucial in preventing potential loss of life.
Additionally, a police officer played a vital role in averting a possible explosion by moving a locked car fitted with a CNG kit away from the fire. This decisive moment highlighted the dangers present during such incidents and the importance of prompt action.
