Key moments
Tirupati, a city renowned for its spiritual significance and the iconic Sri Venkateswara Temple, is witnessing a series of developments aimed at enhancing the experience for the millions who visit each year. Recently, Tirupati MLA Arani Srinivasulu emphasized the NDA government’s commitment to the welfare of the Muslim community, highlighting the inclusive approach towards all faiths in this vibrant pilgrimage hub.
As the city prepares for an influx of visitors, IntrCity SmartBus has launched a dedicated traveller lounge in Tirupati, designed to improve facilities for the thousands of passengers who travel to this sacred site. With daily footfall ranging between 60,000 and 80,000 devotees and annual visits estimated between 30 million and 40 million, the need for efficient travel solutions has never been more pressing. Manish Rathi, a spokesperson for IntrCity, noted, “Travel demand is consistently high in pilgrimage corridors like Tirupati, particularly on overnight routes connecting major cities.”
The significance of Tirupati extends beyond its religious allure; it plays a crucial role in India’s tourism landscape. In 2022, domestic visits to religious destinations reached a staggering 1.43 billion, with religious tourism generating ₹1.34 lakh crore in revenue. Projections suggest that the value of religious tourism could soar to $59 billion by 2028, underscoring the importance of cities like Tirupati in this sector.
In a move to streamline the pilgrimage experience, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has announced the online booking schedule for darshan tickets for June 2026, starting from March 18, 2026. This initiative aims to reduce waiting times and enhance accessibility for devotees eager to partake in the spiritual offerings of the temple. Special entry darshan tickets will be made available on March 24 at 10 am, priced at ₹300, making it easier for visitors to plan their trips.
The Tirupati Laddu, a sweet offering from the temple, is another highlight of the pilgrimage experience, known for its unique taste and holding a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This delicacy not only attracts devotees but also serves as a symbol of the rich cultural heritage associated with the temple.
As the city gears up for the upcoming pilgrimage season, the TTD is also set to launch virtual seva bookings on March 21, 2026, at 3 pm, allowing devotees to engage with the temple’s rituals from afar. This innovative approach reflects the evolving nature of religious tourism, where technology meets tradition to create a more inclusive experience for all.
Reactions to these developments have been largely positive, with many expressing gratitude for the efforts made to enhance the pilgrimage experience. Arani Srinivasulu remarked, “The month-long fasting is not only a symbol of perseverance but also a period of introspection that fosters spiritual growth,” emphasizing the deeper significance of the pilgrimage beyond mere tourism.
As Tirupati continues to evolve, it remains a beacon of spirituality and community, drawing millions from across the globe to its sacred grounds. With ongoing improvements in travel and accessibility, the city is poised to welcome even more devotees, ensuring that its rich traditions and spiritual offerings endure for generations to come.
