The recent protests in Noida’s Phase 2, sparked by factory workers demanding higher wages, have escalated into a troubling situation. The unrest follows a significant wage increase in neighboring Haryana, where the minimum wage was raised from ₹14,000 to ₹19,000. In stark contrast, the minimum wage in Uttar Pradesh remains at ₹13,000, prompting frustration among workers who feel undervalued.

As tensions rose, a peaceful demonstration turned violent, with reports of several vehicles being vandalized and at least one set ablaze. Incidents of stone pelting were also noted, causing damage to property in the area. The situation prompted a heavy police presence to restore order and ensure the safety of both workers and local residents.

District Magistrate Medha Rupam addressed the situation, urging workers to maintain peace and avoid falling prey to rumors. “The administration has directed all factories to strictly follow labour welfare guidelines,” she stated, emphasizing the need for a calm resolution to the ongoing issues.

In response to the unrest, the district administration has announced a series of measures aimed at addressing worker grievances. Factories are now required to ensure a weekly day off for every worker and to pay double for any overtime hours worked. Furthermore, workers are assured that their annual bonuses will be disbursed before November 30.

To provide immediate assistance, a 24×7 control room has been established for worker support, reflecting the administration’s commitment to addressing the needs and concerns of the workforce. Additionally, Internal Complaints Committees will be formed in all workplaces to prevent sexual harassment, further enhancing worker rights and safety.

As the situation develops, officials remain hopeful that these measures will alleviate tensions and foster a more supportive work environment for factory workers in Noida. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether these administrative actions will lead to a resolution or if further unrest is on the horizon.
