“TMC’s Israfil Chowkidar has threatened us that if these people win, they will burn our houses and carry out bloodshed,” a local woman cried out, her voice trembling with fear. The atmosphere in Falta is charged—tensions have reached a boiling point.

The Election Commission of India announced a repoll for the Falta Assembly seat on May 2, 2026, following severe allegations of electoral misconduct during the initial polling on April 29. This decision comes on the heels of massive protests where residents voiced their concerns about safety and accountability, fearing intimidation from political cadres.

The repolling is set for May 21, 2026, across all 285 polling stations in the constituency, from 7 am to 6 pm. Votes from this repoll will be counted on May 24, adding urgency to an already fraught situation.

This tumult follows two phases of assembly polls in West Bengal held on April 23 and April 29. During this period, at least 77 complaints regarding EVM tampering were filed with the Election Commission. Such widespread allegations have raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process.

Key incidents leading to the repoll:

The initial polling on April 29 saw numerous reports of threats from TMC cadre against voters.

A total of 285 polling stations are involved in the upcoming repoll.

Local residents have expressed fears for their safety and demanded accountability from authorities.

As locals gather to discuss their next steps, one woman stated emphatically, “We want him to be arrested. We need safety for women.” This sentiment echoes throughout Falta—a community grappling with fear yet determined to stand up for their rights.

The Election Commission’s statement highlighted that the decision was made after considering severe electoral offences that subverted the democratic process. Yet, as the date approaches, uncertainty lingers over whether adequate measures will be taken to ensure a fair election.
