India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system has officially launched on December 1, 2026, at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza along the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48. This shift aims to automate and streamline the travel experience on national highways.

With this new system, vehicles can now pass through toll plazas without stopping—no more long queues, no more delays. Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, emphasized that “now you will not have to stand in long queues at toll plazas or stop your vehicle.” The goal is clear: make travel so smooth that drivers can reach their destination without interruption.

Key features of the new tolling system:

The system uses AI cameras and sensors to scan vehicle number plates and FASTags.

Toll payments will be automatically deducted from linked bank accounts or wallets.

Cash payments at toll plazas will be phased out, making FASTag or UPI mandatory.

If a vehicle lacks a valid FASTag or has insufficient balance, penalties will apply.

QR codes will be available for UPI payments in case the FASTag fails.

Drivers must ensure their FASTag is active and properly linked to their bank account. The government is pushing for a cashless highway network—reducing human intervention and enhancing efficiency. As Gadkari noted, “the aim is to make travel so smooth that drivers can reach their destination without stopping.”

This monumental change means entry to toll plazas may be restricted for those who repeatedly violate the new rules. While officials have not detailed how these restrictions will be enforced, it’s clear that compliance will be key moving forward.

India's first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system is here. No more stopping at toll plazas — just seamless travel ahead.

India has taken a giant leap towards automated travel with the launch of its first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system on December 1, 2026, at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza in Gujarat. This innovative approach aims to transform how drivers navigate national highways by eliminating the need to stop at toll plazas.

The new system uses advanced AI technology—cameras and sensors—to scan vehicle number plates and FASTags, allowing vehicles to pass through without halting. As Nitin Gadkari noted, “Now you will not have to stand in long queues at toll plazas or stop your vehicle.” The goal? To make travel so smooth that drivers can reach their destinations uninterrupted.

Key features of the new tolling system:

Vehicles can pass without stopping, thanks to AI cameras and sensors.

Toll payments will be automatically deducted from linked bank accounts or wallets.

Cash payments at toll plazas will be phased out; only FASTag or UPI will be accepted.

Penalties will apply for vehicles without valid FASTags or those with insufficient balance.

If a FASTag fails, QR codes will be available for UPI payments.

Drivers must ensure their FASTag is active and linked to their bank account. The government aims to reduce human intervention and make the highway network cashless—a significant shift in toll collection practices. As Gadkari explained, this initiative is about efficiency and modernization.

However, there are uncertainties about how quickly drivers will adapt to these changes. Entry to toll plazas may be restricted for repeated violations of the new rules—something that could impact many who are accustomed to traditional toll systems. The transition period could bring challenges as people adjust to this new norm.

The implementation of this barrier-free tolling system marks a pivotal moment in India’s transportation landscape. It promises not only convenience but also a step towards embracing digital payments and AI technology in everyday life. With the future of cashless highways on the horizon, it’s clear that India is moving forward into a new era of travel.
