“Engaging with critical regional partners such as Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia will help ensure Australia’s energy supply remains secure during times of uncertainty,” stated Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ahead of his upcoming visit to Brunei and Malaysia.

Scheduled from April 14 to 17, 2026, Albanese’s trip aims to address pressing energy supply issues exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The Australian leader will meet with Brunei’s ruler, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss strategies for securing vital fuel and fertiliser supplies.

Brunei plays a significant role in Australia’s energy landscape, supplying 9% of its diesel imports and 11% of its fertiliser-grade urea imports. Meanwhile, Malaysia stands as Australia’s third-largest source of refined fuel, contributing 10% of its fertiliser-grade urea imports. With Australia relying on imports for about 80% of its fuel needs, these discussions are crucial.

Albanese’s visit comes in the wake of localised shortages and soaring prices in Australia, a situation that has intensified since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption has prompted the Australian government to seek stronger ties with its regional partners to ensure energy supply security.

“I will travel to Brunei and Malaysia for talks focused on securing the supply of fuel and fertiliser,” Albanese emphasized, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

In addition to securing energy supplies, Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong are engaging with regional partners to bolster Australia’s energy security amidst global uncertainties. Australia also supplies 95% of Malaysia’s imported natural gas, further intertwining the energy needs of both nations.

As the visit approaches, the focus remains on how these discussions will shape future energy collaborations between Australia, Brunei, and Malaysia. The outcomes could have lasting implications for energy security in the region.
