Menaka Guruswamy has over two decades of legal work that has changed how India defines equality. As a prominent figure in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, she was the lead counsel in the Supreme Court case that decriminalized homosexuality in India by reading down Section 377 in 2018. Her advocacy has not only reshaped legal perspectives but also inspired countless individuals across the nation.

On April 6, 2026, Guruswamy made history by taking her oath as India’s first openly queer Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha. Nominated by the All India Trinamool Congress from West Bengal, her swearing-in drew significant attention beyond the Rajya Sabha chamber, symbolizing a monumental shift in political representation for the LGBTQ+ community.

Born in Hyderabad in 1974, Guruswamy has an impressive academic background, having studied at the National Law School of India University, Oxford, and Harvard Law School. Her contributions to legal education are notable, as she has served as visiting faculty at prestigious institutions like Yale Law School and Columbia Law School.

In 2019, she was recognized as one of the 100 most influential Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine and was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. These accolades reflect her significant impact on both national and international stages.

During her oath-taking ceremony, Guruswamy expressed her commitment to the ideals of equality and fraternity, stating, “I hope to carry these ideals forward into Parliament.” Her words resonate deeply, especially in a country where discussions around LGBTQ+ rights have historically faced resistance.

As a Senior Advocate appointed by the Supreme Court of India in 2019, Guruswamy continues to be a formidable force in legal advocacy. She is also a litigant in the ongoing case for gender-equal marriage rights in India, further highlighting her dedication to advancing equality.

Guruswamy’s journey to this pivotal moment has been marked by resilience and determination. She joins 18 other members who were sworn in on the same day, but her presence is uniquely significant as it represents a breakthrough for marginalized communities.

Observers and officials anticipate that Guruswamy’s role in Parliament will not only influence legislative discussions but also inspire a new generation of leaders advocating for social justice and equality. Her commitment to the Constitution’s values of equality, fraternity, and non-discrimination is expected to guide her work in the coming years.

As India continues to navigate the complexities of social change, Guruswamy’s historic oath serves as a beacon of hope for many, signaling a future where diversity is embraced and celebrated in all spheres of life.
