Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee and former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa have both offered perspectives on the burgeoning career of young cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Sooryavanshi has garnered significant attention after his performances in the IPL 2026 and subsequent call-up to the India T20I side. Lee highlighted the importance of protecting the teenager from the pressures that accompany his rapid ascent in the sport.
Uthappa, on the other hand, emphasised the necessity of proper management, mentorship, and avoiding distractions for Sooryavanshi to achieve a successful career. He drew parallels with the careers of Vinod Kambli and Prithvi Shaw, noting them as cautionary tales of gifted youngsters who struggled to fulfill their early promise.
Talent and mental fortitude
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made a notable impression in the cricketing world at 15, with Lee suggesting the teenager possesses the qualities for future success, provided he is shielded from intense pressure. Sooryavanshi emerged as a prominent figure in the IPL 2026, scoring 776 runs in 16 matches for Rajasthan Royals, which earned him the Orange Cap. His fearless approach against various bowlers was repeatedly displayed.
His performances led to a fast-track selection for India’s T20I team. After a challenging start during the England series, Sooryavanshi showed improvement on India’s Zimbabwe tour, where he was named Player of the Series. Lee believes that Sooryavanshi’s age should not overshadow his current abilities on the field.

He noted that the teenager’s age is a significant talking point outside India. Lee was particularly impressed by Sooryavanshi’s ability to handle express pace during the IPL, including against Australian fast bowlers, mentioning a specific innings of 97 against SRH where Sooryavanshi played proper cricketing shots and demonstrated power.
While Lee expressed little concern about Sooryavanshi’s batting or current form, he indicated that the mental aspect of the game would be the greatest challenge as expectations continue to rise. He stressed the importance of allowing Sooryavanshi to remain a child and not to burden him with excessive pressure. This warning follows Sooryavanshi’s quick progression from a teenage prospect to an IPL star and then an international player, with attention on him expected to grow with continued high-level performance.
