Australia has announced its playing XI for the opening ICC World Test Championship match against Bangladesh in Darwin. Captain Pat Cummins confirmed the team lineup, which includes Cameron Green and Beau Webster, for the match starting on Thursday at Marrara Stadium.
The pace attack will feature Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, alongside veteran spinner Nathan Lyon. This selection means that fast bowler Scott Boland will miss out on the starting XI, as will wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis.
Jake Weatherald is set to open the batting with Travis Head, while Marnus Labuschagne will bat at number three. Green is confirmed to bat at number five, ahead of Alex Carey and Webster, as the team looks to find the right balance in its middle order.
Cummins acknowledged that Boland was unfortunate to miss selection but indicated that he remains a key part of future plans. The captain highlighted the amount of cricket scheduled in the coming months, suggesting Boland would likely feature soon.
The decision to include Lyon was a factor in the composition of the fast bowling attack. Cummins described the selection process for the quicks as a “tight call” and noted Boland’s understanding of his value to the team.
Carey, who has previously contributed at number six, is expected to bat lower in the order. Cummins mentioned the team’s preference for the combination of Carey and Webster at six and seven, respectively, believing it optimizes the team’s function.
The two-Test series against Bangladesh marks the beginning of a demanding schedule for Australia, with at least 20 Tests planned over the next 12 months. The second match of the series is scheduled for Mackay in two weeks.
Squad and Upcoming Challenges
Alex Carey expressed his readiness for the upcoming matches, stating that the team is professional and experienced in preparing for Test cricket. He emphasized a focus on taking “one week at a time” despite the extensive schedule ahead.
The series against Bangladesh is being played during the Australian winter, with Bangladesh having been dismissed for 54 in their second innings during a tour match against a Cricket Australia XI last week in Darwin.
Looking ahead, Australia has an October series in South Africa, followed by five-Test showdowns overseas against India and England next year. The management of the bowling attack will be crucial given the compressed schedule.
Cummins returns to the side after a back issue limited his participation in the summer’s Ashes series. Hazlewood and Lyon also rejoin the squad after periods on the sidelines. Cummins, at 33, is the youngest among Australia’s leading five bowlers, which also includes Starc and Boland.
All-rounders Green and Webster are expected to provide additional bowling options, potentially easing the workload on the main pace attack. Webster, who has been fielding in the slips during training, feels more confident in his role as a Test player after two years on the team’s fringes.
Webster scored 71 not out and took three wickets in a New Year’s Test and has consistently performed for Warwickshire recently. He believes that having more bowling options in the top seven benefits the team and does not view it as direct competition.
Opener Jake Weatherald is under pressure to perform, having averaged 22 from five Tests. He faces a crucial series in his hometown of Darwin, with expectations for runs to secure his selection for the South Africa tour.
The first Test is scheduled to take place from August 13-17 in Darwin.
