Australia women’s vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner has publicly addressed the circumstances surrounding her separation from Monica Wright, expressing regret for the pain caused during their relationship and requesting privacy. Gardner had maintained silence for several months following public allegations from Wright, who accused the all-rounder of infidelity with Australian teammate Georgia Voll during the 2025 Women’s World Cup in India.
Wright had previously criticised Cricket Australia (CA) for its perceived inaction regarding Gardner’s conduct and for allowing her to retain the vice-captaincy. The issue gained renewed attention recently, with Wright again questioning Gardner’s continued leadership role. Cricket Australia had consistently stated that the matter was a private one.
Gardner’s Statement and CA’s Stance
Gardner broke her silence on Thursday, issuing a statement via her Instagram Stories. In her message, she thanked Cricket Australia for its support and confirmed her intention to continue in her leadership capacity. “While my separation from my wife is a personal matter, I understand my current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia, given my position as the vice-captain,” Gardner stated. “I am grateful that the CA Board has chosen to support my continued leadership. I look forward to playing a strong role as a leader and providing the best possible support for my teammates in the season to come.”
Gardner also conveyed her remorse for the distress caused to Wright, wishing her well for the future. “I am grateful for the time Monica and I shared and sorry for the pain this has caused. I wish her nothing but happiness and success in the future. I won’t be making any further comment on this matter at this time and ask that the privacy of those involved be respected,” she added.
The relationship between Gardner and Wright began to strain during the Women’s World Cup in India, following their marriage in April 2025. Wright’s allegations suggested Gardner became involved with Voll during the tournament, leading to Gardner moving out of their shared home. Wright had argued that Gardner should have been removed from her vice-captaincy role and criticised CA’s handling of the situation.
Cricket Australia’s Response and Policy Updates
Cricket Australia has maintained that it has established procedures to ensure professional relationships and leadership responsibilities are managed appropriately. CA stated, “Cricket Australia ensures all relationships within our workforce comply with our Respect at Work policy. This includes putting appropriate conflict-of-interest management arrangements in place to support leadership responsibilities and maintain the integrity of team processes.”
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg confirmed that CA was aware of the relationship between Gardner and Voll before it became public. He also expressed support for Gardner’s continuation in her role. “Ash is a highly regarded leader in our system. The CA board make leadership decisions and have oversight over all leadership decisions,” Greenberg said. “Ash is our vice-captain for a reason, because she’s highly regarded.”
Greenberg indicated that additional policies would be implemented to address situations involving perceived or actual conflicts of interest arising from disclosed relationships between players. He clarified that these measures would ensure that any potential conflicts, particularly concerning team selection, are managed appropriately and respectfully. “If there are relationships that have been disclosed and they have been, then we will make sure that conflict – perceived or real – around selections are removed, so Ash is not involved in those things,” Greenberg explained.
The Sydney Sixers, Gardner’s Women’s Big Bash League franchise, had previously offered their support to the all-rounder amidst the controversy. Gardner’s recent statement indicates her intention to conclude public discussions on the matter, reiterating her request for privacy for all parties involved.
Greenberg also confirmed that Gardner would recuse herself from any leadership meetings where the selection of Voll is discussed. This measure is intended to address any potential conflict of interest, both real and perceived, from both external observers and within the team environment. He emphasised the importance of adapting policies to the realities of high-performance sporting environments.
Cricket Australia’s board discussed the matter and provided an update, with the outcome being strong support for Gardner in her vice-captaincy role. Greenberg highlighted the organisation’s respect-at-work policy and the additional measures put in place to manage potential conflicts related to selections, even though a vice-captain does not directly participate in selection decisions.
