Significant Disruptions in LPG Booking
The Indian oil gas booking system, particularly through Indane, has encountered a crisis as a surge in customer calls has led to a nationwide crash of its LPG refill booking system. The volume of calls to the company’s IVRS and missed call booking numbers has increased to 8-10 times the usual levels, overwhelming the system.
Causes of the Crisis
This unprecedented situation has been exacerbated by government policy changes that have resulted in a dramatic increase in LPG booking volumes, skyrocketing to 10 times the daily average. As a consequence, the government has increased the minimum waiting period for booking a domestic LPG cylinder refill from 21 days to 25 days.
Simultaneously, the supply of domestic cylinders has reduced by 50%, while demand has surged by 50%. Customers are now facing longer wait times for LPG cylinder bookings, leading to frustration and anxiety among consumers.
Price Increases and Supply Challenges
The price of a standard 14.2kg LPG gas cylinder in Delhi has risen to ₹913, marking an increase of ₹60. This price hike reflects the ongoing supply challenges, as domestic production has been prioritized while imports are delayed due to geopolitical tensions. Currently, 60% of India’s LPG needs are met by imports, which adds to the complexity of the situation.
Consumers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the service disruptions. One consumer from Madipakkam noted that “the IVR kept repeating its message,” indicating the frustration with the automated system’s inability to handle the influx of calls. An employee at an Indane distribution center reported that “people were anxious and crowded the office with their empty cylinders to get new ones,” highlighting the urgency felt by many customers.
Operational Challenges
In addition to the booking system issues, the vendor invoice management system has also gone down, further complicating operations for distributors. As one distributor in Bengaluru stated, “We are currently facing an unprecedented situation,” underscoring the widespread impact of these challenges across the industry.
