Airlines Face Disruptions Amid Regional Conflicts
“We are working around the clock to organise additional relief flights where operationally possible and will share further updates as soon as they are confirmed,” stated a representative from Qatar Airways as the airline navigates the complexities of ongoing airspace restrictions.
Qatar Airways has suspended scheduled flights due to the closure of Qatari airspace, a situation that is expected to remain in place until the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority confirms the airspace is safe to reopen. An operational update from the airline is anticipated on March 7 at 09:00 Doha time, but details remain unconfirmed.
In the context of the ongoing US-Israel–Iran conflict, air traffic across the Middle East is experiencing widespread disruption. This has led to significant operational changes for airlines in the region. Israeli airlines, including El Al, Israir, and Arkia, are set to commence limited outbound flights, allowing a maximum of 70 passengers per plane. This measure is part of a broader effort to manage the repatriation of stranded Israelis.
Ben Gurion Airport has been partially reopened for inbound flights, facilitating the return of Israelis who were stranded abroad. Currently, there are approximately 120,000 Israelis stuck outside the country, while around 37,000 tourists remain in Israel. As of Thursday night, about 20,000 Israelis have successfully returned home, with an additional 6,040 expected to arrive on Friday.
Transportation Minister Miri Regev emphasized that the operations will be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of defense officials and in line with security developments. Furthermore, 15 percent of all outbound seats from Israel will be reserved for humanitarian, security, diplomatic, or tourist cases, reflecting the urgent need for organized travel in these turbulent times.
In a bid to assist stranded Israelis, flydubai will resume flight operations to Ben Gurion Airport. This initiative aims to facilitate the return of individuals who are currently in the UAE. Passengers on Israeli airlines are advised to utilize an early check-in program and arrive at the airport 1.5 hours before their scheduled departure to ensure a smooth travel experience.
Qatar Airways is also making efforts to notify affected passengers directly regarding additional relief flights that are being organized. The airline has expressed its apologies for the disruption caused, thanking passengers for their patience and understanding during this challenging period.
The situation remains unpredictable in the Middle East given the current circumstances, and the airline industry is closely monitoring developments. As airlines adapt to the ongoing challenges, further updates are expected as the situation evolves.
